The system behind gender and sexual oppression

12:00pm Saturday 18 September

About this session

The oppression of women and LGBTI people sits at the heart of capitalism and helps prop up a world based on exploitation. From the unpaid labour that women overwhelmingly perform in the home, to the persecution of trans people in the media, oppression helps capitalism divide and rule, scapegoat societies problems on the oppressed, and save billions of dollars by forcing working class people to fulfill vital social functions for free or to work for lower wages. This session provides a Marxist explanation for the roots of gender and sexual oppression – from the family to the workplace and everything in between. It will also explore the important differences between Marxism and the dominant liberal identity politics frameworks for fighting oppression.
