'Net-zero by 2050': the great lie of capitalism's green-washing

12:00pm Saturday 18 September

About this session

This session is available in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

The vast majority of the environmentalist NGO world has focused on convincing governments to agree to carbon emission targets, like net-zero emissions by 2050. Their strategy hinges on international negotiations between nation states to reduce emission eithin a system built on competition, profit seeking and class division. Increadingly liberal and centre left politicians have made formal commitments, set targets and dates while politicians like Scott Morrison who refuse to commit to net-zero by 2050 are outliers. Are these commitments real or are they bullshit? Is net zero by 2050 simply unambitious or are we sleepwalking into catastrophe in the name of profit? Can these proposals create a sustainable economy, or is the only solution to overthrow the capitalist system?
