The Russian Revolution is possibly the most contested event in history. For socialists understanding the rise of Stalinism and the class nature of the regime is vital in defending the real tradition of human liberation at the heart of Marxism. While the Russian Revolution marks the closest workers have come to beginning to build socialism and liberating society from capitalism, the rise of a new ruling class which exploited workers, oppressed minorities and abolished all vestiges of workers control must be explained. How did Stalin rise to power and was it inevitable?
