Opening Night Panel: Capitalism is killing us, the system in the era of covid

6:00pm Friday 17 September

About this session

2021 has been a year of devastation, political polarisation and volatility. The Covid19 pandemic has ravaged the global working class and exposed the deep inhuman logic of a system built for profit and not human need. While the world’s rulers have accepted the loss of millions of lives as an acceptable sacrifice to make in the name of reopening the world’s economies, workers and the oppressed have been on the frontline facing the virus. We are not “all in this together”. While the virus doesn’t discriminate, a system of exploitation, imperialism and competition shapes who are the victims of the virus and who get to profiteer.

At the same time imperialist tensions between the US & its allies and China continue to grow, with the covid19 crisis magnifying trade and diplomatic disputes. Vaccine rollouts have been inadequate, unequal and used as a pretext to “learn to live with the virus” and return to business as usual. In some parts of the world the far right has exploited the crisis and anti-vax conspiracies to build support.

Our opening night rally will take a look at what the pandemic has exposed about the system and why we’re in desperate need for a socialist response.
