Australia on the brink of revolution: the 1890s strikes

2:30pm Friday 2 September

About this session

The 1890s was a tumultuous period of class struggle and rebellion in Australia. Mass strikes by miners, shearers, wharf labourers and others rocked Australian society. While contemporary historians dismiss the radicalism of the period as utopian or exaggerated, this session will explore how these strikes brought Australia to the threshold of a revolutionary challenge to the capitalist status quo.
