Marxism 101: Can we end capitalism through parliament?

10:00am Saturday 3 September

About this session

It’s clear that capitalism has to go, but how do we get rid of it? The central debate in the socialist movement since the time of Lenin and Luxemburg has been whether to dismantle the system through reform or revolution.  Socialists want a world based on mass democratic control of society’s great wealth, can we use the existing institutions of liberal democracy to get there? Parliament, often held up as the path to social change, is profoundly undemocratic. Politicians are under no obligation to fulfil their promises, and parliament itself is an institution thoroughly committed to respectability and stability. Can the state be democraticised or will it need to be smashed?
