The reformism of Karl Kautsky

4:30pm Sunday 4 September

About this session

Kautsky’s name is now largely synonymous with reformism as an opponent of the Russian Revolution and the Communist International. But for some decades prior to the first World War, he was regarded as the leading Marxist authority across the world. More recently, there has been some effort to revive this “revolutionary” Kautsky in opposition to the Bolsheviks, whose politics have largely hegemonized¬†revolutionary¬†Marxism since 1919. This talk will seek to examine the evolution of Kautsky’s politics and its relationship to reformism.
