50 years ago Australia saw its very own coup: the Whitlam Dismissal. Whitlam’s election in 1972 was a defining moment of Australian history. His government was the last Labor government to give real reforms to working class people. Yet, the story of the coup against Whitlam reveals both the limits of democracy under capitalism and the limits of a strategy that sees change ultimately coming through parliament.
