Between Stalinism and the U.S. empire: A history of North Korea

2:30pm Sunday 2 September

About this session

The history of Korea is turbulent, heroic and tragic. From a brutal Japanese occupation, Korea emerged from WWII riven with class struggle and divided between the world’s key superpowers. A vicious war saw the US flatten virtually the entire North, and millions were killed. Meanwhile, authoritarian regimes emerged in North and South. Understanding this history is essential to understanding the current situation.
