Fossil Capitalism

10:00am Saturday 19 August

About this session

From the dawn of the industrial revolution, capitalism has been addicted to fossil fuels. They’re structured into every aspect of production, distribution and warfare. But why is this dirty energy so important to the system?

Today governments, corporations and environmental NGOs alike all claim a transition away from fossil fuels is taking place — is this the case? Can capitalism kick its dirty habit?

This session will look at the historical development of capitalisms dependence on fossil fuels and argue that a genuine and just transition is only possible under a socialist economy.
