Marx on philosophy: the dialectics of history and social change

12:00pm Sunday 2 September

About this session

Marx’s method of analysing society, known as historical materialism, is often summarised using the analogy of base and superstructure. It is one of the most misunderstood and abused of Marx’s concepts, and often used to accuse Marxism of economic determinism. This session will assess Marx’s method in all its complexity, the relations between various aspects of the social totality, and explain the factors that drive social change.
