The Industrial Workers of the World: Australian revolutionaries in WW1

4:30pm Saturday 16 August

About this session

The IWW, known as the Wobblies, were an early radical anti-capitalist organisation in Australia which attracted thousands of workers. Against the parliamentary cretinism of Labor politicians, they argued for revolutionary unionism to overthrow the system. They took a daring internationalist stance opposing the First World War, calling on the working class to oppose the capitalists’ war and resist conscription. This session will look at both the strengths and the limitations of the IWW, and what lessons they have for radicals in Australia today.
