Yasemin Shamsili

Call centre union activist

As a young call centre worker Yasemin Shamsili has been part of a team of delegates who have raised union density at their highly casualised and youthful Melbourne workplace to over 95%. She and her fellow delegates have combined political campaigning with bread and butter organising at the point of production. It is textbook stuff. As an outspoken woman of colour, Yasemin brings insight and verve to a union movement that has largely forgotten how to build power at the grassroots.¬†She’s also the editor of Strike Rate! – the first call centre industry newsletter in Australia.
