The state claims that we are all equal before the law. Individuals are very different in terms of their wealth and power, but the appearance of equality and fairness legitimises the system. Despite what you’ll learn in a university textbook, the law is not neutral. The legal system is designed to serve the capitalist class by regulating the economy and disciplining the working class. The courts and the police work in tandem to protect private property through violence and repression.
This session will look at how the law functions and argue that society will not be made fair by perfecting legal system but by overthrowing the rich and the legal systems that protect them.
