Australia with its supposed democratic, egalitarian traditions, is not immune from the threat of fascism and the far-right. Mass fascist paramilitaries alongside ruling class sympathy for Hitler and Mussolini emerged in the 1930’s. The tumultuous events of the early 1930s are the closest Australia has come to a fascist uprising.
This session will explore this little discussed history and how it reveals the interconnections between capitalist crisis, the economic and political establishment and fascist politics.
